China’s Tencent officially launches WeChat App in India

The WeChat app had already got a soft-launch last year in the month of July. Today, the app received an official launch with a new branding campaign to boost their marketing efforts. In an attempt to tap into the youth mobile users of India, WeChat has gotten Bollywood celebrities Varun Dhawan and Parineeti Chopra as their brand ambassadors. A TVC featuring both the actors has been running on channels since last week. At the event, Tencent showed us another TVC which is soon set to make it to channels.

Head of Tencent India, Mr. Rahul Razdan shared a few interesting facts about the App.

  • WeChat is currently the top downloaded free app from Apple’s App Store in India.
  • On Android, it’s among the top 5 most downloaded Apps. (However, it should be noted that WhatsApp, a competitor,  is first on the list).

Here’s quoting Mr. Razdan’s statement about the app:

WeChat not only allows friends to connect with each other, it also allows brands to interact with their customers creating a personalized two-way channel. WeChat is creating a unique ecosystem where users connect socially with their friends as well as engage with celebrities, brands and businesses making it an all-in-one app, to serve different needs of our users.

WeChat App offers features like ‘Hold-To-Talk, Voice Messaging, Group Chat, Moments, special emoticons and more. We know that Blackberry just announced BBM’s arrival to Android & iOS as well, but WeChat like many other cross-platform messaging app is already available on all major platforms. It’s available across iPhone, Android, Symbian, Windows Phone and Blackberry. The app has 300 million registered user accounts worldwide out of which 190 million are active users.
